1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACS) enzymes catalyze the conversion of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) into 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC), a direct precursor of ethylene.

- Research has shown that abscisic acid (ABA) negatively regulates ethylene production by suppressing the transcription of the ethylene biosynthesis genes ACS4 and ACS8 through the action of the ABI4 protein. PMID: 26410794
