SUP-17 is a metalloprotease that plays a crucial role in several developmental processes in C. elegans. It acts in concert with protease ADM-4, in a cell-autonomous manner, to facilitate LIN-12/Notch signaling during cell fate decisions, including anchor cell/ventral uterine precursor cell specification and vulva precursor cell determination. Furthermore, by modulating GLP-1/Notch signaling, SUP-17 contributes to germline development. Evidence suggests its involvement in regulating body size and mesoderm development through modulation of BMP-like Sma/Mab signaling, potentially via the shedding of UNC-40 ectodomain. Finally, SUP-17 likely regulates axon guidance of the SDQL neuron during development through the shedding of Ephrin EFN-4.
