Function
ALKBH2 is a dioxygenase enzyme that plays a critical role in DNA repair. It specifically targets alkylated DNA containing 1-methyladenine and 1-ethenoadenine, removing these modifications through oxidative demethylation. This enzyme demonstrates activity on both double-stranded (dsDNA) and single-stranded (ssDNA) substrates, exhibiting a preference for dsDNA. Notably, ALKBH2 confers resistance to the damaging effects of methylating agents such as methylmethanesulphonate (MMS).
