Target Background

Function
The Golgi complex form of B4GALT1 catalyzes the production of lactose in the lactating mammary gland. It is also implicated in the synthesis of complex-type N-linked oligosaccharides in numerous glycoproteins, as well as the carbohydrate moieties of glycolipids. The cell surface form of B4GALT1 functions as a recognition molecule during various cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix interactions. These interactions are critical for processes such as development and egg fertilization, facilitated by the binding of specific oligosaccharide ligands on opposing cells or within the extracellular matrix. The secreted form of B4GALT1 is responsible for the synthesis of complex-type N-linked oligosaccharides in many glycoproteins and the carbohydrate moieties of glycolipids.
