Target Background

Function
BADH2 Antibody recognizes a dehydrogenase enzyme that exhibits broad substrate specificity. It can utilize various aldehydes as substrates, including N-acetyl-gamma-aminobutyraldehyde (NAGABald), gamma-guanidinobutyraldehyde (GGBald), betaine aldehyde (Bet-ald), gamma-aminobutyraldehyde (GAB-ald), acetaldehyde, 4-aminobutylaldehyde (AB-ald), 3-aminopropionaldehyde (AP-ald), 4-N-trimethylaminobutyraldehyde (TMAB-ald) and 3-N-trimethylaminopropionaldehyde (TMAP-ald). Notably, BADH2 displays a greater catalytic efficiency towards GAB-ald compared to Bet-ald. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the conversion of GAB-ald into gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby preventing the formation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP), a compound responsible for the aromatic properties of fragrant rice.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. A point mutation in the BADH gene was identified as the cause for the accumulation of gamma-aminobutyraldehyde prior to its conversion to 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, leading to the development of fragrance in Myanmar rice. PMID: 21959793
  2. The Os08g0424500 gene product, designated as BAD2, exhibits significant activity towards gamma-aminoaldehyde, along with minor activity towards betaine aldehyde and other aminoaldehydes. PMID: 18704694
  3. This research marks the first identification of a non-functional Os08g0424500 gene as the responsible factor for the generation of 2-Acetyl-1-pyrroline in Jasmine and Basmati style rice. PMID: 17129318
  4. BADH2 inhibits 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline biosynthesis by depleting AB-ald, a presumed precursor to 2AP. PMID: 18599581
