Function
BASS5 is a plastidic transporter critically involved in the biosynthesis of aliphatic glucosinolates. It facilitates the translocation of biosynthetic intermediates derived from methionine across chloroplast membranes. This transporter specifically handles short-chain (C2) alpha-keto acids, such as 4-methylsulfanyl-2-oxobutanoic acid, moving them from the cytosol into the chloroplast where they undergo chain elongation cycles. Additionally, BASS5 plays a role in transporting chain-elongated (C3 to C8) methionine derivatives from the chloroplast to the cytosol. Notably, it appears to be uninvolved in the transport of indole-derived glucosinolates.
