CED-8 is a phospholipid scramblase that functions downstream of CED-9 and the caspase CED-3. Its activity promotes the externalization of phosphatidylserine on the surface of apoptotic cells. Phosphatidylserine serves as a specific marker and signal for the engulfment of these cells. CED-8 regulates the kinetics of apoptosis during embryonic development, but is not essential for the engulfment of germ cell corpses.
