Description

CIPK7 in Plant Signaling Pathways

CIPK7 belongs to the CBL-interacting protein kinase family, which mediates calcium-dependent responses to environmental stresses in plants. Key characteristics include:

  • Structural classification:

    • Grouped under intron-poor CIPKs with 0–1 introns ( )

    • Contains a conserved NAF/FISL domain for interaction with CBL proteins ( )

  • Functional roles:

    • Cold stress response: Interacts with CBL1 to regulate cold tolerance in Arabidopsis ( )

    • Nutrient stress adaptation: Activated under high carbon/low nitrogen conditions ( )

    • Ion homeostasis: Modulates potassium transporters and H+-ATPase activity ( )

Molecular Mechanisms

  • Phosphorylation dynamics:

    • CIPK7 phosphorylates ATL31 under nutrient stress, enhancing 14-3-3 protein degradation ( ).

    • Required for cold-induced calcium signaling through CBL1 interaction ( ).

  • Evolutionary insights:

    • CIPK7 homologs in Brassica rapa show 86.49% sequence identity between paralogs BraCIPK7.1 and BraCIPK7.2 ( ).

    • Divergent NAF/FISL motifs in CIPK7 paralogs suggest functional specialization ( ).

Research Gaps and Opportunities

No commercial CIPK7 antibodies are documented in the provided sources. Current studies rely on:

  • Genetic tools: qRT-PCR for expression profiling ( )

  • Interaction assays: Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation ( )

Future work should prioritize antibody development to enable protein-level studies of CIPK7 localization and post-translational modifications.

Target Background

Function
CIPK serine-threonine protein kinases interact with CBL proteins. Binding of a CBL protein to the regulatory NAF domain of CIPK protein leads to the activation of the kinase in a calcium-dependent manner. This kinase phosphorylates the rice sucrose synthase (SuSy) in vitro in an allosteric manner. CIPK7 is involved in cold response.
