Target Background

Function
Clathrin is a ubiquitous protein that forms the polyhedral coat of coated pits and vesicles. It is essential for clathrin-mediated endocytosis, a fundamental cellular process that involves the uptake of molecules from the extracellular environment. In oocytes, clathrin may play a role in the endocytosis of yolk proteins during oogenesis.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. In *Caenorhabditis elegans* embryos, the clathrin heavy chain CHC-1 plays a crucial role in regulating pulling forces on centrosomes during interphase and on spindle poles during mitosis. PMID: 24961801
  2. Studies have shown that the inactivation of *epn-1* or *chc-1* genes disrupts engulfment by impairing actin polymerization. CHC-1 is concentrated on extending pseudopods, alongside EPN-1, in an EPN-1-dependent manner. PMID: 23861060
  3. Research suggests that a high level of CHC activity is essential for receptor-mediated endocytosis in non-neuronal cells, but it is largely dispensable for the maintenance of synaptic vesicle pools. PMID: 19151157
