Function
This antibody targets CHE-12, a protein essential for the normal structure and function of sensory cilia on amphid neurons in *C. elegans*. Specifically, CHE-12 is crucial for the formation of distal ciliary structures, while playing a less prominent role in the assembly of middle and basal ciliary structures. It contributes to the organization of axoneme microtubule bundles within sensory cilia.
CHE-12 is also involved in the function of the ASER neuron, which mediates attraction to NaCl. Its presence is required for normal chemotaxis to NaCl and for avoiding high osmolarity. Notably, it is not essential for normal chemotaxis to isoamyl alcohol. CHE-12 does not play a role in intraflagellar transport (IFT).
Interestingly, CHE-12 promotes dauer formation in response to pheromones, including the ascarosides ascr#2, ascr#3, ascr#5, ascr#8, and icas#9.
