Function
Histone H3 is a core component of nucleosomes. Nucleosomes are fundamental structures that wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, thereby limiting DNA accessibility to cellular machineries that require DNA as a template. Consequently, histones play a crucial role in regulating transcription, DNA repair, DNA replication, and maintaining chromosomal stability. The accessibility of DNA is meticulously regulated through a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, often referred to as the histone code, and nucleosome remodeling processes.
