Function
Histone H4 is a core component of the nucleosome. Nucleosomes function to wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, thereby limiting DNA accessibility to cellular machinery requiring DNA as a template. Histones play a pivotal role in regulating transcription, DNA repair, DNA replication, and maintaining chromosomal stability. The accessibility of DNA is regulated through a complex interplay of post-translational modifications of histones, also known as the histone code, and nucleosome remodeling.
