Function
Histone H1 is a core component of nucleosomes. Nucleosomes wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, limiting DNA accessibility to cellular machineries that require DNA as a template. Histones, therefore, play a pivotal role in regulating transcription, DNA repair, DNA replication, and chromosomal stability. DNA accessibility is regulated through a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, also known as the histone code, and nucleosome remodeling.
