Function
HYAL3 antibody facilitates sperm penetration through the cumulus cell layer surrounding the egg by degrading hyaluronic acid. It plays a role in inducing the acrosome reaction in sperm. HYAL3 is also involved in follicular atresia, the breakdown of immature ovarian follicles that are not selected for ovulation. It induces ovarian granulosa cell apoptosis, potentially through an apoptotic signaling pathway involving CASP8 and CASP3 activation, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage. Notably, HYAL3 exhibits no hyaluronidase activity in embryonic fibroblasts or granulosa cells in vitro.
