Function
ATP-dependent RNA helicase, a subunit of the eIF4F complex, plays a crucial role in cap recognition and is essential for mRNA binding to the ribosome. The prevailing model of translation initiation suggests that eIF4A unwinds secondary structures within the 5'-UTR of mRNAs. This unwinding facilitates efficient binding of the small ribosomal subunit, enabling subsequent scanning for the initiator codon.
