Target Background

Function
KNAT1 plays a crucial role in meristem function, maintaining cells in an undifferentiated, meristematic state. Its expression ceases upon the shoot apex transition from vegetative to reproductive development. It acts as a positive regulator of LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES (LOB) and likely binds to the 5'-TGAC-3' DNA sequence. Furthermore, it exhibits intercellular mobility between the L1 and L2/L3 meristem layers, potentially via plasmodesmata.
Gene References Into Functions
  • Loss-of-function KNOX2 alleles in Arabidopsis result in impaired aerial organ differentiation and highly complex leaves, mirroring the phenotype of gain-of-function KNOX1 alleles. (PMID: 25671434)
  • In the cambium, unlike their shoot apical meristem function, KNAT1 and STM promote cell differentiation by repressing BOP genes. (PMID: 25371365)
  • The Arabidopsis ASYMMETRIC LEAVES complex interacts with PRC2, recruiting it to BREVIPEDICELLUS and KNAT2 homeobox genes to silence these stem cell regulators in differentiating leaves. (PMID: 23468429)
  • KNAT1 negatively regulates root skewing, potentially through auxin transport modulation. (PMID: 23889705)
  • KNAT1/BP, but not KNAT2, can substitute for STM in meristem establishment and organization. (PMID: 23573875)
  • ATH1-KNAT2 functions redundantly with KNAT6, both negatively regulated by BP during pedicel development. (PMID: 22140242)
  • BP/KNAT1 acts as a negative regulator, while KNAT2 and KNAT6 act as positive regulators of floral organ separation within the IDA-HAE/HSL2 signaling cascade. (PMID: 21742991)
  • The late-flowering phenotype of as1-1 and as2-1 mutants may result from ectopic expression of the KNAT126 triple mutation. (PMID: 19891706)
  • Heterodimers with PENNYWISE or POUND-FOOLISH are essential for early internode patterning. (PMID: 16741748)
  • BP and PNY restrict KNAT6 and KNAT2 expression to ensure proper inflorescence development. (PMID: 18390591)
  • KNAT1 expression in the integuments causes extra cell divisions in the outer integument layer, compensated by reduced cell volume, highlighting mechanisms controlling ovule integument morphogenesis. (PMID: 18410683)
