Function
Histone H3 is a core component of the nucleosome, the fundamental unit of chromatin. Nucleosomes package and compact DNA, limiting its accessibility to cellular machinery that requires DNA as a template. Histones, therefore, play a crucial role in regulating transcription, DNA repair, DNA replication, and maintaining chromosomal stability. DNA accessibility is regulated by a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, known as the histone code, and nucleosome remodeling.
