Target Background

Function
NPM3 plays a crucial role in regulating diverse cellular processes, including ribosome biogenesis, chromatin remodeling, and protein chaperoning. It modulates the histone chaperone function and RNA-binding activity of nucleolar phosphoprotein B23/NPM. Notably, NPM3 effectively facilitates chromatin remodeling when incorporated into a pentamer complex containing NPM3 and NPM.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. Research indicates that histone chaperones nucleoplasmin (NPM2/NPM3) exhibit preferential association with histones H2A-H2B in both egg and nuclear autoantigenic sperm protein (NASP) families. PMID: 22968912
  2. A study characterized the sperm chromatin decondensation and nucleosome assembly activities of homo- and hetero-oligomers of NPM1, NPM2, and NPM3. PMID: 22362753
  3. NPM3 lacks intrinsic histone chaperone activity but inhibits the histone assembly activity of NPM1 in vitro. Furthermore, it significantly enhances transcription in a cellular system. PMID: 20073534
  4. Acetylation of transition protein 2 (TP2) by KAT3B (p300) alters its DNA condensation property and interaction with the putative histone chaperone NPM3. PMID: 19710011
