Target Background

Function
PDE-4 is an enzyme that hydrolyzes cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a crucial second messenger involved in a wide range of physiological processes. It plays a role in antagonizing dorsal D (DD) motor neuron respecification by reducing cAMP levels.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. Studies have shown that loss of function and neural overexpression of PDE-4 have significant and opposing effects on locomotion rate. However, drug-response assays indicate that loss of PDE-4 function does not influence steady-state acetylcholine release or reception. PMID: 16624912

Protein Families
Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed in dorsal D (DD) motor neurons and several other neurons at the L1 stage. Expression in DD neurons decreases gradually beginning in the late L1 stage. Highly expressed in adult ventral D (VD) motor neurons, but diminished in adult DD motor neuro
