Target Background

Function
Pqe-1 is a putative RNA exonuclease that plays a protective role in neurons against the harmful effects of expanded polyglutamine (poly-Q) disease proteins. While the exact mechanism remains unclear, pqe-1 may either participate in the pathogenic process underlying poly-Q-induced neurodegeneration or act as a genetic modifier influencing the onset and progression of neurodegeneration. Additionally, pqe-1 regulates gene expression in neurons.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. Mutations in the pqe-1 gene, which encodes a Q/P-rich nuclear protein containing an exonuclease domain, have been found to increase the likelihood of reporter expression in AIZ neurons. PMID: 22870397
