Presenilin 2 (PSEN2) is a probable catalytic subunit of the gamma-secretase complex. This complex is an endoprotease responsible for the intramembrane cleavage of integral membrane proteins, including Notch receptors.
Gene References Into Functions
In zebrafish, pre2 exhibits maternal and ubiquitous expression during early embryonic development. However, Pre2 protein expression commences between 6 and 12 hours post fertilization (hpf), indicating a tightly regulated translation process. PMID: 12424519
Research suggests that Psen2 plays a more prominent role in Notch signaling and embryonic development in zebrafish compared to mammals. Moreover, the reduction in Psen2 function can be partially compensated by loss of Psen1. PMID: 19563801
