Target Background

Function
The Translocator protein (TSPO) binds protoporphyrin IX and potentially plays a role in the transport of porphyrins and heme. It was initially identified as a peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptor and can also bind isoquinoline carboxamides. TSPO facilitates the transport of cholesterol across mitochondrial membranes and may contribute to lipid metabolism, though its precise physiological role is currently debated. Some studies suggest that it is not essential for steroid hormone biosynthesis.
