Target Background

Function
RHM2 is a trifunctional enzyme that plays a critical role in UDP-beta-L-rhamnose biosynthesis. UDP-beta-L-rhamnose is a precursor for the primary cell wall components, rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) and rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II). RHM2 catalyzes three sequential reactions: dehydration of UDP-glucose to form UDP-4-dehydro-6-deoxy-D-glucose, epimerization of the C3' and C5' positions of UDP-4-dehydro-6-deoxy-D-glucose to form UDP-4-keto-beta-L-rhamnose, and reduction of UDP-4-keto-beta-L-rhamnose to yield UDP-beta-L-rhamnose. This enzyme is essential for normal seed coat epidermal development.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. RHM2 is found in both Arabidopsis and Camelina sativa, and its expression is regulated by the same transcription factor cascade as the endogenous MUM4 gene. PMID: 28730525
  2. The transcription factors GL2 and RHM2 are crucial for the biosynthesis of mucilage pectin. PMID: 22735692
  3. MUM4 is a target gene of GL2 in the seed coat, and GL2 regulates seed oil production at least partially through its influence on MUM4 expression in the seed coat. PMID: 21883555
