S1PR5 acts as a receptor for the lysosphingolipid sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P). S1P is a bioactive lysophospholipid that exerts diverse physiological effects on most cell and tissue types. S1PR5 couples with both the G(i/0)alpha and G(12) subclass of heteromeric G-proteins. It may play a regulatory role in the transformation of radial glial cells into astrocytes and potentially affects the proliferative activity of these cells.
Gene References Into Functions
Reduced DNA methylation may contribute to the increased expression of the S1PR5 gene in alveolar macrophages, potentially leading to impaired efferocytosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). PMID: 27868302
Research indicates that the mitotic kinase Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) serves as a critical effector of S1P-S1P5 signaling. This suggests a novel function of the SphK1-S1P pathway specifically in controlling mitosis within HeLa cells. PMID: 28351953
TGF-beta2-dependent upregulation of S1P5 is necessary for the induction of pro-fibrotic connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) by TGF-beta in mesangial cells. PMID: 25601519
This study highlights a reduction in S1P5 expression within multiple sclerosis lesions, which parallels the loss of myelin. PMID: 23551178
Findings indicate that sphingosine kinase SphK1 and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptors S1P1, S1P2, S1P3, and S1P5 are expressed in primary, recurrent, and secondary glioblastomas. Notably, sphingosine kinase SphK2 levels were highest in primary tumors. PMID: 24903384
The Edg-5 receptor in brain endothelial cells contributes to optimal barrier formation and the maintenance of immune quiescence in the barrier endothelium. PMID: 22715976
Decreased expression of S1PR5 on natural killer (NK) cells has been linked to the occurrence of graft-versus-host disease following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. PMID: 22541110
The molecular identity, functional properties, and expression profile of the S1P5 (Edg-8) receptor have been extensively characterized. PMID: 11705398
Differences between human S1P(5) and rat S1P(5) are crucial considerations in the development of selective receptor antagonists. PMID: 12234605
Research efforts have focused on identifying and characterizing the gene, describing its expression in normal tissues and large granular lymphocyte leukemia monocytes. PMID: 12427546
FTY720 induces time-dependent modulation of S1P receptors on human oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), resulting in functional responses directly relevant to the remyelination process. PMID: 17918267
The centrosomal sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 5 might act as an intracellular target of sphingosine-1-phosphate, potentially regulating mitosis. PMID: 19211033
Under serum-starved conditions, sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) further upregulates autophagic activity through S1P(5)-dependent pathways in PC-3 cells. PMID: 19474291
Widely expressed in the brain, most prominently in the corpus callosum, which is predominantly white matter. Detected in spleen, peripheral blood leukocytes, placenta, lung, aorta and fetal spleen. Low-level signal detected in many tissue extracts. Overex

Review: The proteins of SPHK1, S1PR5, PPAR-α, and PPAR-γ were detected by Western blot in brain tissue, and the relative expression of SPHK1, S1PR5, PPAR-α, and PPAR-γ was statistically analyzed.
