Function
SDP1 lipase plays a crucial role in the mobilization of fatty acids from oil bodies during seed germination. It exhibits hydrolytic activity towards triacylglycerols and diacylglycerols but does not act upon monoacylglycerols, phospholipids, galactolipids, or cholesterol esters. The activity of SDP1 lipase is essential for limiting the accumulation of triacylglycerols in vegetative tissues, including roots, leaves, and stems. SDP1 functions synergistically with PDAT1, a phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase, in regulating the flow of fatty acids from membrane lipid synthesis towards peroxisomal beta-oxidation, utilizing a transient triacylglycerol pool.
