Function
SULT2B1 is a sulfotransferase enzyme that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as a sulfonate donor to catalyze sulfate conjugation. It plays a crucial role in the sulfation of cholesterol and is responsible for the sulfation of the 3beta-hydroxyl groups of steroids, including pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). SULT2B1 exhibits a strong preference for cholesterol sulfation, but also demonstrates significant activity towards pregnenolone and DHEA. This enzyme is involved in epidermal cholesterol metabolism and the regulation of epidermal proliferation and differentiation. Notably, SULT2B1 preferentially sulfonates pregnenolone over cholesterol.
