Target Background

Function
SULT4A1 is an atypical member of the sulfotransferase family. It exhibits very low affinity for 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) and displays minimal catalytic activity towards L-triiodothyronine, thyroxine, estrone, p-nitrophenol, 2-naphthylamine, and 2-beta-naphthol. This suggests a potential role in the metabolism of drugs and neurotransmitters within the central nervous system.

  1. Research indicates that SULT4A1 is widely expressed across various human tissues. However, it primarily exists as a splice variant that produces a rapidly degraded protein. Dimerization of the protein offers protection against degradation. PMID: 24988429
  2. A study analyzing three psychiatric disorders (n=2815 patients) revealed no consistent association between SULT4A1-1 status and the efficacy of atypical antipsychotic medications. PMID: 25340730
  3. This research provides further evidence supporting the observation that individuals with SULT4A1-1-positive status may experience enhanced responses to olanzapine treatment compared to those with SULT4A1-1-negative status. PMID: 24956247
  4. Determining the SULT4A1-1 haplotype status could potentially be useful for identifying patients who are more likely to exhibit an improved response to long-term olanzapine treatment. PMID: 21521020
  5. This study provides the first immunohistochemical localization of SULT4A1 within the human brain. PMID: 14623933
  6. SULT4A1 has been identified as a candidate gene for susceptibility to schizophrenia. PMID: 16152568
  7. These findings provide the first evidence of how genetic variations in Sult4A1 may be linked to clinical symptoms and cognitive function in individuals with schizophrenia. PMID: 18823757
  8. The lack of polymorphisms within the coding region of the SULT4A1 gene is highly unusual and, coupled with its high conservation across species, suggests a crucial in vivo function for SULT4A1. PMID: 19125109
  9. Cytosolic SULT4A1 interacts with PIN1. PMID: 19439498
