Target Background

Function
Tubulin is a fundamental component of microtubules, playing a critical role in cellular structure and function. It binds two molecules of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha chain. mec-12 Antibody is specifically designed to target the alpha-tubulin subunit of microtubules. This antibody is particularly relevant to the study of neuronal microtubules, as it recognizes the large-diameter microtubules found in neurons, which are composed of 15 protofilaments. Furthermore, mec-12 Antibody is implicated in mechanosensory transduction, specifically touch sensitivity, highlighting its importance in sensory processes.
Gene References Into Functions
  1. Research indicates that mutations in the mec-12 gene, encoding the alpha-tubulin subunit, do not affect tubulin acetylation or microtubule protofilament structure. However, these mutations are thought to alter the interaction of microtubule-binding proteins with microtubules. PMID: 25392990
  2. Studies have demonstrated that acetylation of MEC-12 alpha-tubulin regulates the number of protofilaments in touch receptor neurons of Caenorhabditis elegans. PMID: 22658592
  3. Experimental evidence reveals that mutations in mec-15, a gene encoding beta-tubulin, can be suppressed by mutations in mec-7, a gene encoding another beta-tubulin. Conversely, mutations in mec-12 can enhance these mec-15 phenotypes. PMID: 19652181
