Function
TOM20 is a crucial component of the TOM (Translocase of the Outer Mitochondrial Membrane) complex. It plays a central role in the recognition and import of mitochondrial preproteins synthesized in the cytosol. Specifically, TOM20, in conjunction with TOM22, acts as a receptor for transit peptides on the outer mitochondrial membrane, facilitating the transfer of preproteins into the TOM translocation pore.
