Function
TRPA-1 is a receptor-activated non-selective cation channel that plays a crucial role in the nose-touch response and foraging behavior. It contributes to the neural responses of sensory neurons to touch, particularly after repeated mechanical stimulation. Importantly, TRPA-1 does not appear to be involved in thermosensory or chemosensory behaviors.

- Research has shown that TRPA-1, a cold-sensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) channel, detects temperature drops in the environment, which contributes to extending lifespan. This effect requires cold-induced, TRPA-1-mediated calcium influx and a calcium-sensitive PKC that signals to the transcription factor DAF-16/FOXO. PMID: 23415228
- Studies indicate that harsh touch specifically requires the DEG/ENaC proteins MEC-10 and DEGT-1 (F25D1.4), which are presumed components of a harsh touch mechanotransduction complex. Responses to cold, however, require the TRPA-1 channel and are independent of MEC-10 and DEGT-1. PMID: 20512132
