Target Background

Function
UNC-13 is involved in signal transduction pathways, specifically transducing signals from diacylglycerol to effector functions. One such function is the release of neurotransmitters from neurons. It likely regulates neuronal transmission downstream of lin-3 and receptor lin-23 and phospholipase plc-3 and upstream of innexin unc-7 and egl-4/PKG in ALA neurons. This regulation plays a crucial role in the decrease of pharyngeal pumping during the quiescent state that precedes each larval molt.

  2. A synaptic UNC13A protein variant leads to increased neurotransmission and dyskinetic movement disorder. PMID: 28192369
  3. Research indicates that UNC-13L, UNC-13S, and Tomosyn form a molecular code that dictates the timing of neurotransmitter release. PMID: 23951547
  4. Data suggest multiple roles for the UNC-13 C2A domain, and propose that spontaneous release and the fast phase of evoked release may involve a common pool of SVs at the active zone. PMID: 24220508
  5. The regulation of aging by unc-13 and sbt-1 is temperature-dependent. Changes in reproductive capacity and stress response may be linked to this temperature-dependent property. PMID: 19927169
  6. UNC-13 may regulate multiple steps in the synaptic-vesicle cycle, and its interaction with syntaxin is essential for synaptic transmission. PMID: 16271476
  7. Even with restored synaptic vesicle priming, synaptic transmission remains impaired in unc-13 mutants, suggesting that UNC-13 is also required for other aspects of secretion. PMID: 16880125
  8. Research investigates a role for UNC-13 in RNAi through analysis of RNAi penetrance in unc-13 and eri-1 mutant strains. UNC-13 functions alongside ERI-1 in RNAi. PMID: 17276405
  9. Calcium activated protein for secretion (CAPS)/UNC-31 and UNC-13 play parallel and dedicated roles in dense-core vesicle and synaptic vesicle exocytosis, respectively, in the C. elegans nervous system. PMID: 17553987
  10. Results support a model for docking where UNC-13 converts syntaxin from a closed to an open state, and open syntaxin directly participates in docking vesicles to the plasma membrane. PMID: 17645391
