VPS36 is a component of the ESCRT-II complex (endosomal sorting complex required for transport II). This complex plays a crucial role in multivesicular body (MVB) formation and the sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into MVBs. The ESCRT-II complex is likely involved in recruiting the ESCRT-III complex.
